The End of the World*
August 2004
Linn regret to announce the discontinuation of the multi-award winning SONDEK CD12 reference CD player.
Designed and launched to mark Linn’s 25th anniversary, the SONDEK CD12 transcription compact disc player was developed using the highest performance materials and best components available for the ultimate in pitch-accurate CD reproduction.
The outstanding audio quality and striking design of the SONDEK CD12 won numerous high-profile awards from the audio and design communities respectively. At its launch in 1998 the CD12 won the coveted Japanese Stereo Sound Grand Prix Award, and as recently as 2004 was honoured in the Stereo Times Hall of Fame. In 2000 the UK’s Millenium Design Council selected the SONDEK CD12 as one of its products of the Millenium, exemplifying the best of innovative design in the UK.
Key components used in the CD12, state-of-the-art at its launch in 1998, are now being discontinued. The time has therefore come to prepare for the demise of this iconic product.
Linn have sufficient parts in stock to manufacture 6-9 months supply at current sales levels. However stronger demand will see this limited supply more quickly committed. Customers considering major future source upgrades should therefore get in touch with their Linn retailer as soon as possible. Owners should rest easy in the knowledge that we have made full provision for ongoing service support of CD12, with adequate reserves of essential spare components.
Marking the decision to discontinue production of CD12, Ivor Tiefenbrun, Linn’s M.D. wanted to say: “In recent months I had to sell my own Klout power amplifiers to help satisfy a special unfulfilled customer need but please tell everyone that I have no intention of doing this with either of my CD12s!”
